Best Christmas Present Ever

Christmas is a time to celebrate the love God has for us. We are each known, guided home, and loved personally by God. This love can come to us in many ways. One of the most direct is to experience God’s Light in your inner vision or in the physical itself. The following is a beautiful example of the latter. What better Christmas gift than being comforted by the Divine.

Beam 2 xmas 2013

I was walking on the beach while visiting family on Long Island, New York, on Christmas Day, 2013. Although I was having a relatively good time and enjoying their company, there was a loneliness that I had been experiencing for a period of time. The ups and downs of everyday life, as well as having no significant other to share them with, had led to a low-grade melancholy that I think I was not even fully aware of.

It was late afternoon and the sunset was drawing near. I started to become aware of a distinctly different pattern in the sky, and in all my years of experiencing sunsets, I had never seen anything like it before. There was a beam of light in the sky coming directly down from the Heavens. This beam was golden and perfectly vertical, as if someone had literally carved it out of the clouds behind it. At the bottom the light fanned out and spread across the land and sea in great golden waves.

As I stood there and watched in awe it became more and more distinct. It did not change or dissipate. On the contrary, it was as if time stood still. Everything became very quiet. The amount of light seemed to stay the same even though it was dusk and night was falling. The colors and patterns in the sky were suspended. There was not a breath of wind. And although it was a very cold day, I ceased to be cold.

I stood enveloped in the pure peace and stillness of God’s Love, and as my spiritual guide Del has taught me over the years, one of the ways to recognize the presence of the Divine is in the form of a beam or column of light. I have experienced this beam of light many times in my inner spiritual experiences, so I had already been conditioned to recognize the gift when it manifested physically. I knew very well that I was having a full-blown experience with the Light of God.

There were many gifts and treasures that came along with, and remained in the afterglow of, this sacred experience with the Divine. And probably many more that I cannot even begin to fathom. The following day I continued to feel God’s Presence very strongly – and perhaps deeper than ever before; it was more a part of me and I more a part of it. That presence was in my consciousness at every turn. I experienced a great many things at once; a combination of gratitude, awareness, love, trust, balance, clarity, and very deep peace. It was as if I had literally received a download of Divine attributes.

As I prepared to write about this experience I found myself returning to it and reliving it on a deeper level. I had insights and awareness that I had not even been conscious of before. I realized I was not simply remembering or recalling something; I was re-experiencing something that is alive and fluid, and still available to nourish and uplift me at any time.

Perhaps one of the greatest pearls of this experience is how personal my relationship with the Divine is. God knew my heart was heavy, even more than I did, and personally gave me a gift of love, hand-delivered, on Christmas Day. He reminded me that when I am fully immersed in His Presence there is nothing else I need. Although I still have ups and downs in my life, I am forever changed from the experience. The bar has forever been raised on what is possible and attainable for me spiritually, and for any one of God’s children who has the genuine desire to connect with him.

Blue Bead, Giving, Nature Awareness School, Teacher of the Heart

Witnessing selfless acts of love and kindness can inspire you to do the same. This will lead you to a more abundant life. Those who have a teacher who is a living breathing example of giving back to life in everything they do are most fortunate indeed.

In an early class I attended at the Nature Awareness School there was a student who had recently lost a loved one. At the end of class, Del, the teacher, handed out a small gift to each student in class – a small blue bead that represented our personal experiences with the Divine we each had been blessed with during class. He picked one for himself then gave it to the student in honor of their loved one who had recently passed. I was touched deeply by this. It did not seem contrived or done for effect. It felt genuine and sincere and from the heart.

When I arrived home that act of generosity stayed with me. It kept tugging at my heart until I decided I had to do something, to respond to it in kind. So I sent my blue bead to Del with a short note. His small act had triggered something within me, an innate trust for him buried there. In the note I identified him as a “teacher of the heart.” I am pretty sure I had never even heard that phrase before I wrote it, or given much thought to what one was. Yet I knew without a doubt that he was, and is, just such a teacher. Since that day, he has shown me I am so much happier when I give without expecting anything in return other than the joy of giving. “Giving is its own reward” goes the cliche. It has proven to be very true in my life. It turns out I was not the only one moved by that simple gesture that day. Another student had in fact been similarly touched and had sent their bead to Del as well.

This story is a happy one. Both me and the other student received a replacement bead at a later class, which I was not expecting, but was silently hoping for, and overjoyed to accept. Mine will always remind me that a “Teacher of the Heart,” one who teaches by lessons and by example, is a rare and precious gift. A teacher who hears and speaks to our hearts, who is fluent in the Language of the Divine, and who is adept at reading us better than we often know ourselves. A teacher who knows how to help us be the best we can be spiritually. The kind of teacher to give us practical tools to live a better life; the abundant life God has planned for us. The kind of teacher God would send to His children to help remind us He loves us and wants us to return home again.

Parable of the Honey Bee

Life is not about powering through mentally as you follow a formula, it is about learning how to trust and follow your heart. There is no one “right way” of doing things that fits everyone. All too often though, people fall into the trap of trying to “do it right” which brings stress and worry. Life is so much sweeter to live if you can just “bee right” with God and yourself.

A honeybee buzzes along through a meadow on a warm summer morning and lights upon a flower. She gathers golden grains of pollen upon her legs and drinks deeply of the flower’s nectar. She stays until her work is done, then moves along to another. So simple, yet so wise.

Another bee enters the meadow but follows a wavering course. She seems to hesitate and change her mind as she flies along. Finally, she lands on a flower and gathers a few grains of pollen but then hesitates again. “Am I on the right flower? Should I be over there instead,” she wonders turning toward the goldenrod at the edge of the meadow. “Or there?” She starts to fly to a different flower, but then looks back to the first one, perhaps it was the right one after all. Finally, exhausted and confused, she heads home to the hive with only a few grains of pollen to show for her day.

Mindy Bee collapsed in her corner of the hive and breathed a sigh as she reviewed yet another frustrating day. “How does Soula do it?” she wondered. It seemed so effortless for her friend, but to Mindy, it seemed impossible. Just then Soula passed by humming a song to herself.

“Soula,” Mindy called. “I saw you in the field today and you seemed so confident. How do you always know which are the right flowers?” “Oh Mindy,” she said, “you don’t need to worry about that. Just be right instead of trying to do everything right.” Mindy thought about what Soula said all night.

For the next week Mindy watched Soula closely. She counted how many flowers Soula visited per trip, how long she danced in the hive, how many trips she made, and how far she flew for each trip. By the end of the week Mindy had a template for how she could be right like Soula. The next morning she flew out on a mission.

She flew the median distance and then visited an optimal number of flowers before heading back to the hive with the largest load of pollen she had ever collected that early in the morning. She danced the correct number of minutes before heading out for another load. At the end of the day she was exhausted but this time also had a feeling of accomplishment. She had achieved her goal. The next day she followed her template again, and then again. Each day she came home exhausted but the feeling of accomplishment was weaker each day until finally it was gone. She began to wonder if she had missed something.

Watching Soula dance Mindy noticed something she had missed before. Soula danced with joy. Now that she had seen it, Mindy began seeing joy in her other bee friends too, even when they were not dancing. Where had they found this joy?

That night when her friend came humming by Mindy stopped her again. “Soula, where did you find joy? Was it on a special flower? I tried to be right like you said, but I think I missed something.” “You’re still trying to do it right, Mindy. Relax. Enjoy the sun and the beauty of the flowers. Just go where your heart tells you,” Soula said. Mindy thought about that all night long.

She flew out the next morning not knowing what to do without her template. She stopped on the first flower she saw and all the old fears held at bay by her rules came back. What if she chose wrong?

“Trust yourself!” Soula called as she flew by. Perhaps that was what Mindy had missed all along. Though it felt as if she were flying off a cliff Mindy took a deep breath and began to fly. The sun warmed her wings and a gentle breeze carried her further down the field. Below there was a flower she liked and Mindy landed on it. She drank the sweetest nectar she ever tasted and gathered golden grains of pollen on her legs, but when she took off again she felt lighter than ever. She visited one flower after the other that called to her. Soon, she was humming her own tune and when she returned to the hive, she danced with joy.
